Kan man undskylde fortidens fejltrin?

Den officielle undskyldningstale er et særpræget retorisk fænomen hvor vidt forskellige retoriske former og funktioner mødes, hvorfor den er oplagt som udgangspunkt for diskussioner om visse dimensioner af retorisk agency. Forfatteren argumenterer desuden for det konstruktive i at anskue visse former for undskyldningsretorik i et epideiktisk perspektiv. Gennem en analyse af statsminister Anders Fogh Rasmussens tale i Mindelunden d. 4. maj 2005 illustreres det hvordan talen både indskriver sig uproblematisk i den epideiktiske genre og samtidig bryder genren. Ved at indlægge en officiel undskyldning for danske myndigheders udlevering af bl.a. jødiske flygtninge til den nazistiske besættelsesmagt tilføjer Anders Fogh Rasmussen mindetalen et element af apologi. Denne undskyldningsretorik lægger op til en diskussion af Anders Fogh Rasmussens retoriske agency i talen: Hvordan er hans undskyldningsretorik mulig som meningsfuld symbolsk handling?
