The author argues that institutional ethos is a decisive factor in modern media genres, and that it ought to be analyzed separately from personal ethos. The discussion deals with a corpus of Norwegian film reviews, from which persona emerges as a means by which individual writers can maintain a personal ethos – that is to say a strategic resource for dealing with changing genre conventions and institutional goals.
