Recent systems theoretical sociology has approached the rhetorical tradition. Its subject of analysis is defined as communication and like rhetoric its point of departure is the problem of the contingency of communication. But on the other hand systems theoretical sociology differs considerably from the rhetorical tradition in the answers found to the problem of the contingency of communication. This article investigates this blend of common problem and different answers – from a systems theoretical perspective. The article does not aim at a theoretical fusion between the two disciplines; instead it proposes to experiment with empirical and analytical possibilities, to place the analyses in a historical-functional context, and to strengthen the focus of the disciplines through mutual observation and dialogue.
