Abstract

Thomas B. Sheridan’s comedy of manners The School for Scandal (1777) is read as an instance of rhetoric of insult.
Through an account of the comedy’s plot and an analysis of its structure and persuasive means the comedy is characterized as
an instance of effective dramatic use of slander and insults. This use is viewed as didactic since we as readers/spectators learn to
both laugh at and take exception to the school for slander and insults. The comedy is read as an epideictic celebration of merits that unites its audience.
