In Denmark, the transfer from absolute monarchy to democracy was peaceful. While this is the common opinion, historians have established that it is a myth. Instead, attention should be concentrated on a speech given by the liberal politician Orla Lehmann. In this speech, Lehmann narrates the latest news of the decisions made by the political council in Slesvig, and he warns that the riot of the Slesvigholsteiners may result in the dissolution of the Danish kingdom. Lehmann speaks in way that is supposed to lead to swift action, but he does so against his better judgement and with no supporting evidence. Based on a rhetorical reading of argumentation and insinuation in Orla Lehmann’s address at Casino, the article discusses and evaluates whether the Danish democracy was founded on a deceit.
