This article addresses the question of how rhetorical studies should deal with a world which has become more fragmented, changeable and complex than ever before. First part describes central characteristics of such a society and suggests the challenges this poses for the study of rhetoric. Second part discusses theories about the rhetorical situation in order to determine how they are able to treat such a society. Third part proposes three ways rhetorical research may approach the fragmented, changeable and complex world.
