Denne artikel behandler spørgsmålet om hvordan retoriske studier bør forholde sig til en verden som er mere fragmenteret, foranderlig og kompleks end nogensinde før. Første del giver en kort beskrivelse af centrale egenskaber ved det fragmenterede, foranderlige og komplekse samfund. Den antyder samtidig de udfordringer dette giver retorikken som fag. Anden del diskuterer teorier om den retoriske situation for at afklare i hvilken udstrækning disse magter at forholde sig til retorikken i vor tids samfund. Tredje del giver et bud på nogle veje som fremtidens retoriske forskning i højere grad bør gå hvis vi ønsker at tegne et tydeligere og mere fuldstændig billede af samtidens retorik.
